54% of US internet households own a connected health product, unlocking new value for remote care applications in healthcare and senior care

Industry webinar, in collaboration with Syntiant, includes insights on device data, the role of AI in new use cases, and the impact of low-power computing devices

DALLAS, August 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — New consumer data from Parks Associates shows the continued growth of connected health devices, with 54% of US Internet households owning at least one product and 23% owning three or more. The research firm will highlight the findings during an industry webinar, “Healthy IoT at the Edge: Affordable, Smart, Secure,” On Wednesday, August 10in collaboration with Syntiant, to discuss new applications in health and elder care through the use of low-power, edge computing devices.

“Driven by the adoption of smartwatches, consumers and patients have become accustomed to using devices to collect, transmit and interpret health data. Telecare in the home relies on both the quality of patient monitoring and the quality of insights provided to the care team and family caregivers,” said Kristen Hanich, director, broadband and health research, Parks Associates. “The use of predictive analytics and machine learning algorithms in healthcare turns real-time data into actionable and potentially life-saving insights and diagnostic support.”

Research by Parks Associates reports that 57% of consumers find on-device health data sharing attractive, and more than one in three are looking for care providers that offer it. The webinar examines the use of data from healthcare devices to empower patient care, the role of AI and algorithms in enabling new use cases, low-power edge AI solutions, and best use cases in remote patient monitoring and elder care people.

“There is tremendous value in bringing modern AI to connected health devices, not only for manufacturers but also for consumers,” said Hubak KhodabandeVice President of Product, Syntiant Corp. “New use cases can be implemented quickly, efficiently and at relatively low cost, while patient outcomes are improved by using machine learning to enable highly accurate real-time monitoring and cloud-free data processing help to ensuring privacy and security.”

Speakers of the webinar:

  • David GarrettChief Architect, SVP Engineering, IEEE Fellow, Synthiant
  • Hubak KhodabandeVice President, Product, Synthiant
  • Henry O’ConnellCEO and Founder, Canarian speech
  • Kristen HanichDirector, Broadband and Health Research, Parks Associates

Examples of use cases powered by AI and algorithms include the following:

  • Algorithmically compare patient trajectories
  • Proactively identify and avoid health crises
  • Triage of risk patients
  • Diagnose unidentified and undiagnosed medical conditions
  • Detect health decline and dementia through speech patterns
  • Predict falls or reduced mobility in the elderly

These systems are even more powerful when combined with edge computing that offers ultra-low latency, high reliability, and data privacy/security benefits compared to cloud-centric systems. In addition, low-power edge AI solutions can be tailored for many battery-powered healthy IoT sensors and devices that need intelligence, security, and low power consumption.
