Time for Amsterdam, Ibiza and Rio de Janeiro to move. There is a new party capital making a name for itself. Once a sleepy surfer village in southern Bali, Canggu is fast becoming the party capital of Asia… and the world.

Canggu is located on the southern coast of Bali in Indonesia, located west of Kuta, Seminyak and Legian. Each has become a world-renowned party destination in its own right over the past 25 years.

Canggu has grown rapidly over the past decade, leading to the development of luxury beach clubs, lavish yet affordable accommodation and an unforgettable nightlife.

The best beach clubs in Canggu

Canggu’s party scene is perhaps best known for its beach clubs. All of them have played a huge part in putting the area on the map.

Finns Beach Club is widely regarded as the best beach club in Bali, offering guests a choice of four pools, eight bars (two of which swim up!) and five different restaurants. The venue hosts live DJs daily and is located right on Berawa Beach. Grab your spot for the spectacular sunset, and when the sky darkens, it’s time to turn up the music and party the night away.

Atlas Beach Club only opened its doors in July 2022 and is already making its mark as the best one-stop entertainment venue in Bal. Now the largest beach club in Bali (with ambitions to be the largest beach club in Asia), the venue is fully operational to ensure guests have the time of their lives. Hosting world-class DJs and offering access to Berawa Beach, Atlas Beach Club is another must-see.

La Brisa offers a premium experience with a strong emphasis on food and cocktails. The Beach Club is the perfect place to start a big night out in Canggu. La Brisa offers pool parties and cozy lounge areas, all against the backdrop of Echo Beach. Their themed event nights are legendary, as is their laid-back Sunday market.

Having ticked off these best Canggu beach clubs, next on the list should be The Lawn, Old Mans and Vue Beach Club.

Canggu’s leading party spots

As one of the best party capitals in the world, Canggu has events on the calendar every day of the week. If you’re looking for a 7-day party itinerary in Canggu, it might look a little like this;

Monday – Luigi’s Hot Pizza – Meat Monday is not to be missed!

Tuesday – Old Mans for a classic Canggu party at Batu Bolong Beach

Wednesday – Head to the Vault for a quick night of their Afro-Latin Dance Hip Hop Night. Wednesday is the biggest night of the week; sometimes not having a plan other than to party hard can lead to the night of your life!

Thursday – Pretty Poison – grab a few beers around the skate bowl and see where the rest of the night takes you…probably back to the Vault. Want a new place? Explore the neighboring Black Cat or Jungle.

Friday – The Lawn for sunsets and live DJ sets. Then hop over to the Sand Bar for a wild after party.

Saturday – Atlas Beach Club or Finns Beach Club – set aside a whole day to experience the beach club atmosphere, reserve a table and call your team.

Sunday – La Brisa for more relaxed vibes or Deus Ex Machina if you want to welcome the new week with a bang!

Party hard, live and work in Canggu

Canggu manages to balance a hardcore party scene with a health, wellness and sports vibe. There are countless gyms, surf schools and spas for travelers to maintain their party lifestyle without compromising their health. Famous for surfing, the coastal village now welcomes MMA fighters, yogis, skaters and CrossFit junkies. Canggu has long been a favorite destination for influencers and travel bloggers. There is now a thriving community of digital entrepreneurs.

Affectionately known as “Gu” by longtime international residents, it has universal appeal. The area has an increasingly global community, with many Australians, Americans and Europeans making the place their new home. In fact, the authorities in Bali are working hard to make it easier for digital nomads to set up shop.

There are two ways for travelers to stay in Canggu. One option is the 30-day tourist visa on arrival, open to citizens of 75 countries, including the US. The visa costs 500,000 IDR (33 USD) and is valid for 30 days, it can be extended once for an additional 30 days.

Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism has announced that digital nomads can live in Bali’s best digital nomad towns, such as Canggu, with a B211a socio-cultural visa. This is valid for 60 or 180 days and can be processed online. The 180-day visa costs IDR 6,000,000 (USD 400) and takes 4 days to process after submitting the relevant documents.

Instagram Vs. The reality of partying in paradise

Canggu is a much-loved destination, but the area has recently hit the headlines. Not everyone is thrilled with the area’s new party capital status. Naturally, locals and long-term foreign residents are concerned about how the party scene affects the area’s reputation.

Just 10 years ago, Canggu was a rural coastal village that rarely housed a few thousand surfers and travelers looking to escape the busier beaches of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. Now development is booming. Agricultural landscapes have been transformed into guesthouses and hotel complexes. Roads originally built for a few local moped users now compete with full-on rush-hour traffic jams.

It’s not all bad news, though; actions are being taken to ensure that Canggu can sustain its development. Local senators have raised their concerns about road infrastructure with the provincial government. Officials said they will review development budgets next year. It is hoped that the funds will be disrupted to improve infrastructure for the benefit of the local community and the tourism industry.

A petition went viral in early September when local residents complained of noise from large halls exceeding 90 decibels. Local authorities have taken swift action. They will coordinate with all venues to ensure noise levels remain below 70 decibels. A solution why I hope it will mean the party scene won’t clash with locals and other holidaymakers in the area.

There is no doubt that Canggu’s party scene is going from strength to strength. As perhaps the best kept secret party destination in the world, the area is no longer low! Once known only to a seasoned few, Canggu should top the bucket list for every party-focused traveler from here on out!
