Casting the Fantastic Four may be the most difficult task Marvel Studios has faced in a long time, especially given the debate that surrounds the subject. Fans on social media have been sharing their dream actors to fill the iconic roles, but one name tops it all: John Krasinski.
The office star had long been considered the dream casting for Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic – a dream that was fulfilled in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. As Benedict Cumberbatch’s magician embarks on a journey to Earth-838, he encounters the Illuminati, a team that includes Krasinski’s Smartest Man Alive.
To the disappointment of many, Krasinski’s Reed Richards met his demise as he was turned into human cheese in his battle with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
There is now speculation as to whether the actor will return as the leader of the Fantastic Four on Earth-616, but it seems that may not be the case.
Rumors Reveal John Krasinski’s MCU Future
According to a rumor from “trusted sources” on the moderators of the Marvel Studios spoilers sub-Reddit, Marvel Studios is no longer considering John Krasinski to play the MCU’s Reed Richards in The Fantastic Fourdespite appearing as a now-deceased Earth-838 Variant in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Moderators have accurately revealed several scoops about the MCU in the past, including Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk blasting off into space aboard a spaceship and Daredevil having “different” role in She-Hulk.
This rumor was already supported by previous reports that Marvel Studios was talking to other actors, including Penn Badgley, for the role of Reed Richards. If Marvel Studios still intends to bring Krasinski back in the lead role, it’s unlikely they’ll be looking for other actors.
Krasinski previously dodged questions about his MCU future while pretending to fake his death after being shot with a dart by Marvel Studios security.
Comments from Doctor Strange 2 director Sam Raimi has already created problems for Mr. Krasinski’s Fantastic Future, as he revealed The office the actor is selected “because it’s an alternate universe” and “fans had a dream about who the perfect Reed Richards would be:”
“It’s so funny that Kevin [Feige] voices John [Krasinski] because fans had a dream about who the perfect Reed Richards would be. And because it’s an alternate universe, I think Kevin said, ‘Let’s make this dream come true.’ I’ve always enjoyed all of his performances.”
Who will play Mr. Fantastic on the MCU?
Many will be disappointed to hear that Marvel Studios doesn’t see John Krasinski as their future The Fantastic Four franchise, but at least fans were treated to a taste of this look in the The Multiverse of Madness. Maybe he could even come back again through the Multiverse as a member of the Reed Council.
Krasinski has recently been busy with A quiet place franchise, his next project Imaginary friendsand more seasons of Jack Ryan on the road. So even if it was on the cards for Reed Richards, Krasinski may not have the time or interest to devote the next ten years to this pivotal role in the MCU.
Rumors were previously revealed that Marvel Studios was looking for a “very traditional” Reed Richards for the MCU, with Penn Badgley at the top of the list. If Badgley is indeed in the conversation, it could suggest the studio is looking for an actor in his mid-30s, putting Krasinski right outside that age bracket at 42.
Like Netflix’s breakout star YouBadgley is still looking for the project that will properly introduce him to the big bad world of Hollywood and The Fantastic Four this could be it. He certainly looks the part and has the acting chops to pull it off, so maybe he could end up getting the role unless another contender comes along.
As of now, most assume that Marvel Studios has yet to sign their Fantastic Four actors, otherwise they would likely have been announced at D23. With more than two years until the premiere, there will be many more opportunities to announce the star-studded cast, including San Diego Comic-Con in 2023.
John Krasinski’s Reed Richards cameo can be seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which is now streaming on Disney+. The Fantastic Four hits theaters November 8, 2024.
