Maryland football improved to 3-0 on Saturday with a thrilling win over SMU. As we do every week, we’ll take a look at how the Terps’ 2023 class fared during their most recent high school games.
DJ Samuels – Edge Rusher, Bergen Catholic (NJ): Samuels and Bergen Catholic continued to roll as they defeated Seton Hall Prep 35-14. Samuels continued his usual dominance on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he had four carries for 79 yards, one of which was a 59-yard touchdown. They face a tough test next week against Don Bosco Prep.
Braden Wislosky — ATH, South Columbia (NJ): Wisloski and Southern Columbia bounced back from a rare loss with a dominant performance in a 54-0 victory. Wisloski contributed with a punt return 71 yards for a touchdown and a 24-yard score on the ground. Wisloski finished with seven carries for 100 yards.
Robert Long — QB,St. Peters Prep (NJ) Long and St. Peter’s held on in the final minute to beat Delbarton 32-27. Long was 33-43 for 311 yards, with four total touchdowns and one interception. He led St Peters’ preparations down the field for the eventual game-winner as their defense managed to hold Debarton on the ensuing kick.

Deandre Duffus — OL, Chaminade Madonna Pre (Florida): Duffus helped Chaminade Madonna to a 42-34 win over American Heritage. Duffus continues to anchor the offensive line while Chaminade Madonna continues to put up huge numbers on offense.
Sean Williams – WR-St. to John: Williams followed up his three-touchdown performance from last week with a solid performance. He led St. John’s to a 49-13 victory over Tottenville and had four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Jonathan Akins — CB, Madison County (FL) Akins and Madison County suffered their second straight loss in a 21-0 loss to Columbia. This is their first loss back to back in three years.
Daniel Wingate — LB, St. Vincent Pallotti (MD.) Wingate and St. Vincent Pallotti suffered a 10-7 loss this week against Clarkson North. Wingate and Pallotti did their best defensively to hold Clarkson North to 10 points, but couldn’t muster enough offense to earn the victory.
Alex Moore — S, St. Vincent Pallotti (MD.) Moore, who is also with Pallotti, suffered a tough loss in a game that featured offensive struggles on both ends.
Josh Richards — WR, East Orange Campus (NJ.) Richards and the East Orange Campus fell short of their first win of the season and fell 34-27 to Randolph, but he caught two touchdown passes. They made things interesting at the end, scoring 13 straight to get within one possession, but still fell short.
AJ Szymanski – TE, Loyola Blakefield (MD.) Szymanski and Loyola Blakefield fell to 1-2 on the season after a 36-30 overtime loss to St. Mary’s.
Michael Morman – DB, Dr. Henry Wise Jr. (MD.) Morman and Wise continued their dominant campaign Saturday with a 50-0 win over Laurel. Through three games, they have outscored their opponents 137-18. Morman did not appear in the field score.
Tyvon Nelson – DB, Canarsie (New York) Nelson and Canarsie fell to Life Christian Academy 28-14. The offense had several turnovers and the defense couldn’t overcome them to get the win.
Dylan Fontus – Edge Rusher, Canarsie (N.Y.) Fontus is Nelson’s teammate and on the ball with him. Canarsie will look to bounce back next week against Tottenville.
Lavon Johnson – DL, Cheshire Academy (CT.) Johnson and Cheshire Academy lost a season-opening heartbreaker to Williston Northhampton 15-14. Johnson will be a mainstay for their defense as the season progresses.
Kevis Thomas – CB, Lowndes (GA.) Thomas and Lowndes fell to 2-2 on the year following their 49-34 loss to East Coweta. Thomas will play quarterback at Maryland, but is still contributing as a receiver for Lowndes. He had a nice 14-yard touchdown reception despite the loss.

Ryan Manning – WR, Academy of St. Francis (MD.) That game was featured on ESPN2 Thursday night as St. Francis and Manning defeated Venice 34-17. Manning didn’t find the end zone, but he was active throughout the game with multiple targets and several big catches to help the Panthers improve to 3-0.
Dylan Wade – TE/DE, Jones (Florida) Wade and Jones suffered a tough 14-13 loss against Edgewater this week. Wade was able to score a short rushing touchdown at the 3rd neighborhood of the Wildcat Formation. Jones, unfortunately, failed to convert the extra point on their second touchdown, resulting in a one point loss.
Derrick Rogers – WR, Jones (Florida) Rodgers caught a beautiful touchdown on a fade route in the back of the end zone to bring Jones within one. But the PAT was missed, which now puts Jones at 1-2 on the year.
