There’s something special about escaping the summer heat to sit in a cool theater and relax with a bucket of popcorn and a cold soda.
After more than a year of cinemas being closed due to COVID-19, the world of cinema is back with the summer 2022 line-up.
This summer’s options range from drama, family, action, thriller, and more. The local theater has something for everyone.
Here’s a roundup of the five best movies to watch this summer.
At the bottom is “Elvis” starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. If you’re a Disney and Nickelodeon fan from the early 2000s like me, you might recognize Butler from your favorite childhood TV shows. After making guest appearances on Zoey 101, ICarly, Wizards of Waverly Place and more, Butler made his starring debut as Elvis.
This movie shows the life of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. From his rise to fame to his fall with drug addiction, it’s all covered here.
Tom Hanks is Colonel Thomas Andrew Parker, Presley’s manager. Only true Elvis fans know the truth behind the Colonel and his toxic relationship with Elvis.
After illegally immigrating from Holland to the States, Parker discovered Elvis and used his talent as a ticket to pay off his own gambling debt. In return, Presley became the best-selling artist in history, and that remains true to this day.
The film illustrates how societal pressures can shape harmful habits and the consequences of that.
“Elvis” is one you can’t miss, especially for music history fans.
#4: Thor Love and thunder
The list wouldn’t be complete without a Marvel movie in the mix. “Thor Love and Thunder” is the 4th film in the “Thor” series and the 29th in the entire Marvel Universe.
If you’re like me, you have next to no idea how the Marvel universe works and which movie follows which. However, I’ve been told that Thor Love and Thunder is a perfect movie for Marvel dummies like me.
The fourth installment in the Thor series takes viewers through Thor’s journey to defeat Gor with the help of his ex-girlfriend Jane. Together, the two embark on a mission to achieve peace and closure.
Maybe this will be the movie that finally introduces me to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
Jordan Peele has done it again. The recently released film No is right among horror/thriller fans. Since I don’t happen to be part of the horror movie fan club, I haven’t seen this movie yet.
Following in the footsteps of his previous horror films, Get Out and Us, this addition to Peele’s collection of horror films.
Horror fans can’t get enough of Peele’s comedy-turned-horror.

The film follows two siblings who discover something unusual in the sky above their ranch. This takes the two on a journey to discover and address this situation.
Make sure you hold onto your popcorn and be careful not to get spooked while watching this movie!
#2 Where Crawdads Sing
Bookworms, this one’s for you. “Where the Crawdad’s Sing” is based on the bestselling book written by Delia Owens.
The story follows the life of a young woman, Kya Clark. Kya has been isolated and closed off all her life due to being different from the rest of her community. After being abandoned as a child, Kya grew up in her home located in the swamplands of North Carolina, giving her the evil nickname, Swamp Girl.
When one of her past love interests is found dead in the swamps, Kya is the first person to be blamed.
This film highlights the encounters and challenges she faces due to being different and reveals secrets that should remain unknown.
I entered the theater pessimistic, fearing the extended running time of the film. When I came out, tears were streaming down my face. This movie had an emotional impact on me and many others in the room.
“Where the Crawdad’s Sing” is not only based on a bestseller, it is also based on the harsh reality of the world we live in. This story shows the challenges that society places on those who stand out from the rest. Outsiders.
This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat, make you cry and rethink how you treat others. I highly recommend watching this movie.
#1: Above a gun
After its original premiere in 1986, Tom Cruise returned with several other stars for the long-awaited sequel to the hit film “Top Gun Maverick.” For those who watched “Top Gun” in 1986, this is a big deal.
The original ’80s film was the highest-grossing film of 1986, bringing in $176,781,728 million. Directed by the late Tony Scott, this film is one for the ages.
Following in Scott’s footsteps, director Joseph Kosinski created a sequel that captured the attention of action movie fans everywhere.
Maverick (Top Hanks) returns to the United States Naval Academy, where he trains current TOPGUN students, including the son of his deceased best friend, Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller). Maverick must lead his students on a dangerous mission as he faces the harsh reality of his past.
Action-wise, this movie has it all together with a drama-filled storyline that can be traced back to the original 1986 film.
One drawback of the film is the absence of beloved actors from the original. Both Kelly McGillis (Charlie Blackwood) and Meg Ryan (Carol Bradshaw) are missing from the sequel. McGillis and Ryan are adored by fans of the first film and 1980s movie geeks alike.
Despite the hesitation to see a sequel to the beloved 1980s movie, Top Gun: Maverick is definitely the number one movie to watch this summer.
Here it is. Five movies you need to see before school starts back up in the fall. Don’t judge a movie by its trailer. Head to your local movie theater to not only see top-rated new releases, but also to get that nostalgic feeling that streaming services can’t provide.
Thank me later.
